Prosthodontics

Prosthodontics is the dental speciality for the restoration and replacement of teeth. Prosthodontic treatments include veneers, crowns, bridges, dental implants and dentures. Treatment can be for a single tooth at a time but it can also be on a more comprehensive scale where it involves several and sometimes all teeth.

The aim of prosthodontic treatment is to provide the patient with an aesthetic and functional set of teeth and treatment usually addresses specific dental concerns. Where cosmetic changes to teeth may be a choice on the part of the patient, prosthodontic treatment rarely is. Teeth are important in every aspect of our daily lives and worn, broken or missing teeth can be the cause of great concern, and unhappiness. The outcome of prosthodontic treatment is therefore frequently described as life changing by patients who no longer have to live with fears of public embarrassment and limitations.

Crowns

A crown is a restoration that covers a tooth, giving extra strength and improving the tooth’s aesthetics. Crowns can be made of porcelain and precious metal compounds of gold, glass or porcelain and should be matched closely to the natural shade of your teeth.

Bridges

Bridges replace missing teeth. They comprise false teeth, known as pontics, anchored with crowns on neighbouring teeth. The supporting teeth need to be strong and healthy to support the bridge though precisely positioned implants can also be used.

Dentures

There are many types of dentures but they all share the common goal of replacing missing teeth in as comfortable and aesthetic way as possible. Partial dentures replace a few missing teeth while full dentures are used by patients who have lost all their teeth in either one or both jaws. Successful dentures carefully constructed with the patient’s input are often described by the patient as life changing. It is also one of the most professionally rewarding treatments that a prosthodontist can provide. Dentures can be made from a variety of materials, including porcelain and plastic, and can be removable or fixed using dental implant

Implant-supported bridges

An implant-supported bridge is similar to a regular dental bridge, but it is supported by implants and not by natural teeth. In most cases, when an implant-supported bridge is used, one implant is placed in the jawbone for each missing tooth. Then the crowns are connected to each other to form one piece

An implant-supported bridge is used when more than one tooth is missing. It also may be used when your dentist is concerned that you might put too much pressure on individual implants that are not connected to each other. For example, clenching or grinding your teeth can put a lot of pressure on individual implants. This can increase the chances that they will loosen from the bone and fail. An implant-supported bridge reduces the pressure on the individual implants in the bone, and spreads it across the entire bridge.

If the implants will be placed next to natural teeth, the natural teeth and surrounding gums must be in good health. If you don’t have enough bone to place and support the dental implants, the supporting bone can be built up using bone augmentation or grafting before the actual implant procedure begins.

Implant-supported denture

An implant-supported denture is a type of overdenture that is supported by and attached to implants. A regular denture rests on the gums, and is not supported by implants.

An implant-supported denture is used when a person doesn’t have any teeth in the jaw, but has enough bone in the jaw to support implants. An implant-supported denture has special attachments that snap onto attachments on the implants.

Implant-supported dentures usually are made for the lower jaw because regular dentures tend to be less stable there. Usually, a regular denture made to fit an upper jaw is quite stable on its own and doesn’t need the extra support offered by implants. However, you can receive an implant-supported denture in either the upper or lower jaw.

You should remove an implant-supported denture daily to clean the denture and gum area. Just as with regular dentures, you should not sleep with the implant-supported dentures at night. Some people prefer to have fixed (permanent) crown and bridgework in their mouths that can’t be removed. Your dentist will consider your particular needs and preferences when suggesting fixed or removable options.
